Der Violinist und Komponist Johannes Berthold wurde 1899 in Chemnitz geboren. Nach dem Studium (Violine und Komposition) bezeichnete sich Berthold bereits als freischaffender Komponist und Dirigent. Bertholds Werk umfasst einige Kammermusiken, aber sein Schwerpunkt lag auf großen sinfonischen Besetzungen, auch mit Chor. Drei seiner Werke wurden bei Wettbewerben ausgezeichnet: Concerto da Camera op. 30 für Klarinette und Streichorchester (1962), Concerto für Violine und Orchester op. 34 (1964), Metamorphosen und Fuge (1972)
