Henry Purcell hat in seinem œuvre zahlreiche Cembalostücke hinterlassen, die in mehreren Sammlungen überliefert sind und häufig die Überschriften "Trumpet Tune" oder "Trumpet Voluntary" aufweisen. In den vorliegenden "Trumpet Voluntaries" wurden derartige, in der Regel kurze Werke zu größeren musikalischen Formen zusammengefügt, so dass Kompositionen entstanden, die sich den Dimensionen der Chor- und Orchestermusik Purcells annähern. Die einzige überlieferte Abschrift von Reinckens berühmter Choralfantasie, angefertigt von Bachs Schwiegersohn Johann Christoph Altnikol, war seit 1945 verschollen und wird nun nach ihrer Rückführung von Russland nach Berlin erstmals in einer kritischen Ausgabe vorgelegt.

As an essential part of English music-making, organ music developed completely independently of the continent until the middle of the 19th century. Until then, even large English organs had no independent pedal division or only an attached pedal.
